Sega Announces Re-release of Genesis Classic Edition

The console war has begun once again. This time in regards to the latest consoles coming to market, the plug and play TV console.

Just a couple of weeks after its long time rival, Nintendo, announced the release of the NES Classic Mini, a plug and play TV console which replicates the 1980s Nintendo NES console, Sega has jumped on the bandwagon, announcing the re-release of the Sega Genesis Classic Edition, a mini console based on the original Sega Genesis console that comes pre-loaded with 80 games.

The timing of the announcement is apt, with the release said to be in celebration of Sonic The Hedgehog‘s 25th anniversary. As many gamers and fans of Sonic the Hedgehog would know, Sonic is the mascot and lead character for Sega, much like Mario is for Nintendo.

Despite the console being inclusive of good gaming titles such as the Mortal Kombat 1, 2 and 3, as well as including a cartridge slot for those who still possess old Sega Genesis cartridges, the Genesis Classic Edition does lack one major modern day enhancement: an HDMI connection, which the NES Classic Mini does have. Without this, the Genesis console is limited to a single component AV port, which means requiring an old SD TV in order to play the games in reasonable quality. However, there’s also the handheld console option too, which Sega has announced.

Will you be picking this console up? What about it are you most excited for?
