South Park: The Fractured But Whole Review

As a South Park fan, Tom couldn’t wait to play South Park: The Fractured But Whole, and was glued to the game, playing at all hours of the day. Here’s his review of a game he thoroughly enjoyed.

Let’s start this off by making things nice and easy for you. If you don’t like South Park or it’s crude humor this game is not for you. It’s as easy as that. But if you’re a fan of South Park, RPGs and superheroes, then strap yourselves in as you’re in for one hell of a ride with Ubisoft’s latest game, South Park: The Fractured But Whole (“South Park: TFBW”).

The game continues where the previous game, The Stick of Truth, left off, where you as the “New Kid” have become “King” of the town. Eric Cartman then immediately shows up, dressed as his hero alter ego “The Coon” to explain that Lord of the Rings now sucks and superheroes are now the new, cool thing everybody is playing, however, you aren’t allowed to play, unless you start from the bottom again and become the sidekick character for “The Coon and Friends”. Thus the game begins.

South Park: TFBW plays very similarly to its previous game. You explore the town of South Park completing various quests and battling “bad guys”. The game features turn-based combat where you control the New Kid and up to 3 of the South Park kids as their superhero alter egos. Each of the kids have their own unique play-style and you yourself can choose from an array of super powers to control. You can be a Gadgeteer, a pretty decent hero, “but not as cool as Ironman” as Eric describes; a Brawler like Marvel’s The Thing or Hulk; or even a speedster like DC’s fastest man alive, The Flash. There are 10 different classes altogether and you can mix and match classes as you progress through the game. Each of the kids and superhero classes all have their own impressive “Ultimate Moves” to decimate any opponent on the battlefield. The only draw back to this is the unskippable animation you see each time you activate your ultimate move. It’s nice to see it the first 5 times but after that it can feel a bit stale.

There’s not much to say about the look and sound of the game because quite simply, it looks and sounds like an extended episode of South Park and there is certainly nothing wrong with that. The game is certainly one made for South Park fans, with highly addictive content that results in players wanting to return over and over to complete the various missions and overall, the game as a whole.
