The Sony PlayStation Media Showcase at E32017

Sony’s PlayStation Media Showcase was held at The Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall in Los Angeles. Prior to the Media Showcase, Sony was gracious enough to provide members of the media with a fantastic pre-show mixer, a space to chill out, meet new and like-minded people and get some hands-on time with PlayStation games including the highly anticipated Detroit: Become Human.

The mixer was a godsend. After a full day at various conferences across L.A, it was incredible to meet other industry members from Australia and New Zealand, hang out with them over good food and simply relax. Sony always had a way with putting on great get togethers for their supporters and this mixer was no different. I, personally enjoyed the night, especially when I ran into two popular British YouTubers, who I had been following for a reasonable length of time in my early 20s. Never did I imagine that I would meet, yet alone have a decent conversation with Rose and Rosie, who were just lovely, down to Earth ladies.

However, while the mixer was fabulous, I was a little disappointed with PlayStation’s E3 Media Showcase. After sitting through two hours of super exciting announcements and a spectacular display from Microsoft at their Xbox E3 Briefing, I was sure that Sony had a whole heap of surprises in store for us. However, the event was more of a slideshow of trailers and gameplay footage with colourful displays and special effects, including pyrotechnics for Call of Duty: World War 2.

Despite having a slew of exciting games on show, most were not new announcements and were instead, an extended look to titles announced last year. Perhaps Sony intentionally kept the good stuff for their own event, the PlayStation Experience, later in the year. I wouldn’t be surprised to be completely blown away by the showcase and announcements made at that event.

While we await the exciting things that I’m certain are brewing at Sony, here is a list of games that were revealed at the E3 Media Showcase:

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy
Horizon Zero Dawn: the Frozen Wilds expansion
Days Gone – a zombie game that looks rather interesting with astounding graphics
Monster Hunter World
Shadow of the Colossus Remastered
Marvel vs Capcom Infinite – which includes a story demo that is available now
Moss – a cute game where the protagonist is an adorable mouse
God of War – which sees the once fearsome and angry Kratos as a more controlled and thoughtful father to his young son
Detroit: Become Human
Destiny 2
Call of Duty: World War 2 – releases August
Star Child
The Inpatient
Monster of the Deep
Bravo Team
Spider-Man – which releases in 2018, gameplay footage of which looks absolutely incredible

Of course, as a huge fan of the Uncharted series, Spider-Man and God of War, learning that these titles were coming sooner than expected is fantastic news. Of the entire list of games, I’m certainly most excited for Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. I’d always loved the character of Chloe in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. It’d be great to play as the female explorer and adventurer, especially when the entire game is set in India, a country rich with culture, mythology and amazing architecture.

Thankfully, some of these titles have hands on time available at the E3 expo. Hopefully there’ll be more to report once we complete our hands on time with some of the upcoming PlayStation titles.
