Ruby Rose Cast as The CW’s Batwoman

The CW has found its perfect lead for the role of Batwoman: Hollywood sweetheart, Ruby Rose.

Announced earlier today, Rose is set to play Kate Kane, the alter ego of the Gotham crime-fighter, in the network’s upcoming Arrowverse crossover event, which will air in December this year.

Rose is most notable for her roles in Orange is the New Black and John Wick: Chapter 2, and is no stranger to playing openly gay characters on screen. No doubt she’ll fit right in playing Batwoman, one of DC Comics’ most well known gay superheroes.

According to The CW, Batwoman is “an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence”

DC Comics described Kate Kane’s Batwoman as:

“The daughter of a prominent Colonel and cousin to Bruce Wayne, in the comics, Kate has a tragic childhood in which her mother and sister are both killed after being abducted and taken hostage, leaving her to be raised by her father. Eventually accepted to West Point, Kate does very well academically until it’s discovered that she’s in a lesbian relationship with another student and chooses to leave the school rather than lie about who she is. Over time, inspired by Gotham’s most famous vigilante, Kate finds a new way to fight for justice under the guise of Batwoman.”

Rose will star alongside Stephen Amell (Green Arrow), Grant Gustin (The Flash) and Melissa Benoist (Supergirl) in the crossover event that will introduce her character and later in her own Batwoman series.

The casting has us extremely excited as we’re big fans of the Arrowverse series on The CW, which we believe include actors well suited to take on the iconic DC Comics superheroes. The fact that the Batwoman series will be written and produced by CW veteran Caroline Dries, of The Vampire Diaries and Smallville fame, is an added bonus. Bring on December!
