This Week in Geekdom: Another Streaming Service, Smallville Reunion & More

Another week has gone by and a new streaming service has been announced. In top of that, a very interesting poster for an upcoming superhero flick has been revealed. All this and more in this week in geekdom.

Films

Birds of Prey and the Fabulous Emancipation of one Harley Quinn

Warner Bros. Pictures have dropped the first poster for the upcoming film, Birds of Prey.

Due out in February, the film sees Margot Robbie reprising her role as Harley Quinn alongside Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who will play the Huntress and Jurnee Smollett-Bell as the Black Canary.

The film will follow Harley Quinn as she joins Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez) in order to save a young girl rumoured to be Cassandra Cain (Batwoman) from Black Mask (Ewan McGregor).

A short clown themed teaser trailer played in front of IT Chapter 2. With the film only a few months out, hopefully a full teaser will be unveiled soon.

Knives Out

A new trailer for Rian Johnson’s Knives Out has dropped and shows a little more of what to expect from the whodunnit murder mystery.

When a mystery writer is murdered, what ensues is a series of shenanigans that has private investigator, Benoit Blanc, played by Daniel Craig, on the hunt for a murderer in a family of vindictive back stabbers. All of whom had a reason to kill.

The cast also includes Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, Toni Collette, Ana De Armas and Michael Shannon.

Streaming & TV Shows

NBC Streaming Service: Peacock

American TV station, NBC, is joining the streaming wars with its service, Peacock.

NBC is owned by Universal, so it will have an extensive library of both film and television shows when it launches in April. There will be, reportedly, 15,000 hours’ worth of content on the streaming platform.

In addition to the backlog of content, a reboot or spin-off of Battlestar Galactica is on the way from Mr.Robot creator, Sam Esmail. There’s also an adaption of the Aldous Huxley’s novel, Brave New World, in the works, which will star Demi Moore and Alden Ehrenreich.

On the comedy side, a reboot or spinoff of The Office will hit the service, as a well as new talk show with Jimmy Fallon.

There’s no word yet on how or if these new shows will be distributed internationally.

Raising Dion

Netflix has released a trailer for its upcoming Michael B. Jordan produced sci-fi series, Raising Dion.

The film follows single mom, Nicole Reese (Alisha Wainwright), as she raises her son, Dion, who possesses unique superhuman abilities. Michael B. Jordan is producing the series and takes on the role of Mark Reese.

The series hits Netflix on the 4th of October.

Smallville Reunion on Arrowverse Crossover Event

Praise the lords! Smallville fans have had their prayers answered. The Arrowverse showrunners have confirmed that Tom Welling and Erica Durance, who played Clark Kent and Lois Lane respectively in the long running TV series will be reprising their Smallville roles in multiple episodes of the upcoming crossover event, Crisis on Infinite Earths.

The event will likely explain exactly what Clark and Lois have been up to since the series ended.

Video Games

Terminator Resistance

Developer, Teyon, and publisher, Reef Entertainment, have released a trailer for their upcoming game, Terminator Resistance.

The first person-shooter is set during the war between humanity and the machines in the lead-up to the final battle.

You play as Jacob Rivers and according to the game’s official website, players will take on story missions plus side quests, and depending on your actions, multiple endings.

Terminator Resistance will be available on Xbox One, PS4, PC and will be available on November 15th in the EU and Australia, followed by North America on the 5th of December.

A Total War Saga: Troy

Creative Assembly has announced the newest iteration to the Total War franchise, titled, A Total War Saga: Troy.

Inspired by Homer’s, The Iliad, players will take on the roles of Troy or the invading Greek army in one of history’s most epic and legendary conflicts.
