This Week In Geekdom: Kenobi Series, New Need For Speed & More

The end of August draws near and as such, comes some excellent announcements across pop culture. Here are the top news of the week in your weekly dose of this week in geekdom.

Film News

Mortal Kombat Adds New Cast Members

The upcoming Mortal Kombat reboot film has found its leading man in Ludi Lin. The Power Rangers and Black Mirror actor is in talks to play Liu Kang in the film. Joining him are Mehcad Brooks (Supergirl), who will play Jackson “Jax” Briggs, an American Special Forces soldier with a cyborg arm; Tadonobu Asano (Thor: Ragnarok) who will play the God of Thunder and Lightning, Raiden; and newcomer Sisi Stringer, as Mileena, the clone of Kitana.

The newly announced cast will join Joe Taslim, who was first to be cast in the film as Sub-Zero.

Lady & The Tramp Reveals First Photo

Disney has revealed the first official image of Lady & the Tramp, the upcoming live-action film adaptation of Disney’s classic animated film.

The image shows the real life rescue dogs that are to be used in the film. Unlike The Lion King, which is fully CGI animated, Lady & The Tramp will use real life animals to depict its story.

Obi-Wan Kenobi Series on Disney+

Ewan McGregor has been revealed to be in talks to reprise his role as Jedi Master, Obi-Wan Kenobi, in an upcoming Disney+ series focused on the character. It’s not surprising, as a Kenobi focused film has long been in talks. Though details have not been shared, it is likely that further announcements may be made at Disney’s D23 expo later this month.

SYFY’s Krypton Has Been Cancelled

SYFY has announced that it has cancelled Krypton. The television series, which follows Superman’s grandfather, Seg-El, and his mission to redeem the House of El name, lasted for only two seasons. The network also noted that it will not be going ahead with a Lobo spinoff series, as originally planned.

EA Announces New Need For Speed Game

Electronic Arts has announced the next installment in the Need For Speed franchise, Need For Speed Heat. The game deepens and expands everything Need for Speed fans love – expressive customisation, authentic urban car culture, and an immersive narrative that pulls you into the game. Need For Speed Heat is set to release on 8 November.

PlayStation Reveals New Fall DualShock 4 Controllers

The DualShock 4 controller family expands with the addition of four new colour variations and a brand new Rose Gold headset. The four new colours include Electric Purple, Red Camouflage, Titanium Blue, Rose Gold.  The new controllers will be available in Australia and New Zealand this September.
