Day 2 of the D23 Expo was once again filled with jaw-dropping news. Today’s focus for Disney was on its upcoming films.
Walt Disney Animation
Raya and the Last Dragon
Walt Disney Animation Studios has today revealed Raya and the Last Dragon, a new film inspired by South East Asian culture.
The film is directed by Paul Briggs and Dean Wellins and written by Crazy Rich Asians screenwriter, Adele Lim. Cassie Steele will voice the character of Raya while Awkwafina is voicing the dragon, Sisu. Raya and the Last Dragon is set to release on November 26, 2020.
Frozen II
At the expo, Disney revealed new songs for Frozen II, along with the announcement of two new additions to the cast. Evan Rachel Wood will voice Elsa and Anna’s mother, Queen Iduna, while Stirling K. Brown will voice Lieutenant Matthias. The film is set to release on November 22.
Pixar
Soul
Pixar’s upcoming film, Soul, follows the notion that every individual comes with a pre-determined soul that has been formed to perfection. The film is directed by Pete Docter and stars Jamie Foxx as a middle school band teacher, who dreams of playing jazz in a legendary New York jazz club. The film also stars Tina Fey, Daveed Diggs, Questlove, and Phylicia Rashad.
Onward
Pixar released new footage of their upcoming film, Onward, at D23. The film stars Chris Pratt and Tom Holland as Barley and Ian Lightfoot, two elves who go on a quest to find if there’s still magic left in their dull world.
Walt Disney Studios
Cruella
The first official image of Disney’s Cruella was revealed. The film follows Cruella De Vil in her formative years, supposedly prior to the events of 101 Dalmations. The film stars Emma Stone as the titular character.
Jungle Cruise
At D23, Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt took to the stage to announce Disney’s newest film, Jungle Cruise. The film, which takes its name after the popular Disneyland ride, is a romantic action comedy.
The film follows cruise skipper, Frank (Johnson), who is in a financial bind, and Lily (Blunt), and adventurer in search of a mystical tree, whi enlists Frank’s help. Jungle Cruise is set to release in theaters on July 24, 2020.
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil
A new and rather eerie footage from Maleficent: Mistress of Evil was revealed at D23 today. The footage, which has not been released to the public, sees Maleficent (Angelina Jolie) and Aurora (Elle Fanning) in a tense situation regarding her future. They then make their way to the castle for dinner with the King and Queen, where things even more intense. A closer look at Chiwetel Ejiofor’s character is also given.
