PAX Australia kicked off in Melbourne last weekend and it was a massive year for the convention. Major publishers brought with them a taste of what gamers can expect from the rest of the year and well into 2020.
While cosplayers and gamers roamed the floors of the convention centre, we had a chance to check some of the best upcoming games.
Cyberpunk 2077
CD Projekt Red brought Cyberpunk 2077 to Australia for the first time. They showed off the game via a live gameplay demo hosted by Hollie Bennett. The demo essentially featured the full 45-minute demo of the one shown at E3 and Gamescom earlier this year.
Showing it off three times throughout the weekend for all attendees to get a chance at checking it out, the gameplay gave an insight
into what players will be doing while they explore Night City.
On the tabletop side of things, the jumpstart kit for Cyberpunk Red made its Australian debut and it flew off the shelves. Aetherworks, the online tabletop RPG store carrying the game sold out on the first day. Fans who missed out or couldn’t attend, need not fear as the newest iteration of the pen and paper RPG is coming to stores on the 11th of November.
Marvel’s Avengers
One of next year’s most anticipated games took up a large portion of PlayStation’s booth, with a tutorial demo available for attendees to play.
Crystal Dynamics also held a special panel showcasing Kamala Khan’s role in the game. Studio head, Scot Amos, revealed that Kamala was the character giving the monologue in the very first trailer revealed all the way back in 2017. Amos also disclosed very briefly that PlayStation fans are in for more surprises beyond just getting the beta first. However, he stressed more details on that will come at a later date.
Fans who were lucky enough to sit in on the panel also received a PAX exclusive poster by comic book artist David Yardin, which was then signed by both Yardin, himself, and Scot Amos. A very special treat for Marvel and Avengers fans.
THQ Nordic
In an Australian first, THQ Nordic, through Koch Media, brought a ton of their upcoming games to PAX. This included the remaster of Destroy All Humans to the highly antcipated Darksiders Genesis.
One of the biggest games they brought with them, however, was the long awaited BioMutant. Attendees were given a chance to play the starting segment of the game, which included a rather deep character creator. BioMutant is due out sometime next year.
PAX Australia 2019 was one of the best that I’ve been to so far, without a doubt. There were a ton of new games to try out, from the Final Fantasy VII remake, Dreams, and Marvel’s Avengers to the excellent work of our own local industry developers.
More on our PAX Australia adventures are to come soon. Stay tuned.
