Disney has finally revealed the main cast of its upcoming adaptation of Eoin Colfer’s popular young adult series, Artemis Fowl.
Slated for release in August 2019 and directed by Kenneth Branagh, the film will star newcomer Ferdia Shaw, who will play the titular young, criminal mastermind. Alongside Shaw will be Josh Gad, playing the role of Mulch Diggums, “a kleptomaniacal dwarf who works for the fairies—and himself”, Oscar winner Dame Judy Dench, who will play Commander Root, “the steely leader of the fairy police force”, Lara McDonnell playing the “elf hero” Captain Holly Short and Nonso Anozie, who will portray Artemis’ bodyguard, Butler.
Artemis Fowl follows the 12-year-old millionaire criminal mastermind, Artemis Fowl II, whose plot to outwit the secret Fairy People and extort gold from them puts him directly in the cross-hairs of some of the most dangerous creatures on Earth. However, as the book series continues to develop, so too does Fowl and he becomes more of an antihero rather than a villain, more often than not working together with the fairies to stop treacherous megalomaniacs from their pursuit of power.
As a huge fan of the book series growing up, and a fangirl of Disney films, I’m absolute thrilled to learn that the film is moving forward. The series is certainly in good hands with Kenneth Branagh and Disney.
