Acer has announced that its annual Asia-Pacific Predator League Grand Final tournament will be held on 15-17 February 2019 in Thailand; reaffirming its ongoing commitment to the esports industry.
Hosted by Acer’s leading Predator brand the tournament will bring together a throng of dedicated esports players from all over the Asia-Pacific region including a team from Australia and New Zealand. The tournament will feature offline & online events to determine the top three placing teams for both PUBG and Dota 2, who will receive part of the total prize pool worth US$250,000.
The qualifying competition kicked off in Australia and New Zealand on 6 September and Acer Predator partnered with Throwdown Esports to host the Predator PUBG OCE Open Series. There were four closed qualifier rounds and a final round; which saw over 50 teams compete in the popular Battle Royale game, PUBG.
The top 18 teams that qualified battled it out in a livestreamed final round via Throwdown’s Twitch channel on Saturday, October 13 to determine which team will head to Thailand in 2019 to represent Australia and New Zealand in the Asia-Pacific Predator League Grand Final. The winner of the PUBG OCE Open Series tournament was Team Immunity; a large Australian esports organisation founded in 2003.
“Ever since Acer launched the Predator brand in 2015, we have been dedicated to providing hardcore and pro gamers with top quality notebooks, desktops, monitors and accessories that will transform their gaming experience,” said Darren Simmons, Oceanic Managing Director of Acer Inc. “In Australia we are thrilled to support local eSports teams and provide them with a platform and the tools to test their skills and compete on a regional level. We are thrilled to be supporting Team Immunity as they represent Australia and New Zealand in the Asia-Pacific Predator League 2019.”
The esports market continues to grow exponentially in Australia. A recent report by PwC found that the industry totalled $8 million last year, and is forecast to grow to $21 million by 2022. As the industry attracts more and more people through its combination of social, streaming and gaming, Acer is continuing to invest in this area.
Acer was recognised as the number 1 gaming PC brand in Australia and New Zealand in Q2 2018 by both Microsoft and IDC and also saw a 40 per cent increase in PC gaming growth in Q2 2018.
