Magic The Gathering 2021 Annual Showcase recap

This week Wizards of the Coast revealed what’s to come in the Magic the Gathering world with some amazing new announcements.

  • Collaborations with Warhammer 40k, Street Fighter, Lord of the Rings and FORTNITE (This is a real announcement)
  • 4 new sets unveiled
  • Updates on the Magic: The Gathering animated series
  • And a bunch of other announcements

Let’s jump in and go over them in more detail.

Into the MTG Multiverse!

Once again, Fortnite, yes, that Fortnite, will be joining the Magic: The Gathering universe through Wizards limited edition runs call Secret Lair Drops. In the past, these drops have included special alternate art versions of popular cards, special artist collaborations, redesigns of cards (‘Alpha style’ Planeswalkers and ‘Reminder Text’ lands) and most notability, a Walking Dead crossover. The Walking Dead drop featured 5 brand-new legend cards featuring fan favorite characters from the show.

This time round, Fortnite will only be entering the Magic-verse through Fortnite-themed art in 2 different drops. The Street Fighter drop will however will feature brand new cards similar to the Walking Dead. This will include a “mechanically unique” Chun Li card which will of course include the Multi-kicker ability.  These drops are due out next year in 2022.

Warhammer 40k will be making an appearance through 4 themed Commander decks. Dropping next year featuring new art, new cards and reprints which are all set in the 40k universe. Space Marines and other factions from the 41st millennium will all be making an appearance.

And the final news from the Magic multi-verse side of things is the Lord of the Ring set: The Lord of the Rings: Tales from Middle-earth. This will be a Modern and Historic legal set will be launching in 2023 and will feature Gandalf, Gollum, Frodo and more. I can’t wait, it’s an exciting time to be a Magic player and this is only the first lot of announcements!

From cardboard to TV screens

A quick update on the animated series that will be on Netflix in late 2022. The animated series is currently in full production and it was confirmed that Brandon Routh (credits: ArrowThe FlashSuperman Returns), will be voicing Planeswalker, Gideon Jura. We’re promised that some familiar faces will be making appearances throughout the series and we should be expecting a story that has never been told before. Are we about to get a Magic movie-verse too?!

Fan favorites return

WE’RE GOING BACK TO KAMIGAWA AND DOMINARIA!

That’s right, next year is going to be absolutely wild. Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty will be the first set to release early next year and takes place in Kamigawa but 2000 years into the future. Looks like we’re getting cyborg ninjas! Following that, Streets of New Capenna will be the second set of the year. Capenna is a world of grit and glamour that mixes angels, demons, and magic. If anyone has played Hearthstone, I’m getting some really Mean Streets of Gadgetzan vibes here. Players will be taking on the role of one of five crime families and vie for power in the city.

For Q3 we return to Dominaria in Dominaria: United. Not much was revealed about this set asides from that we will be meeting some familiar heroes and villains. And finally to end the year, we’re getting The Brother’ War. A set that focuses on a pivotal story of Dominaria. The feud and war between Urza and Mishra. A plane-spanning conflict that lasted decades.
