Nintendo has released some exciting news today, starting with the announcement that a Mario Kart game will be making its way over to smartphones some time within the next year.
The mobile game, Mario Kart Tour, is expected to release some time between April 2018 and March 2019 across both Android and iOS devices. Further details have not been released at this time.
This will be the fourth Nintendo game to be developed for smartphones, following Super Mario Run, Fire Emblem Heroes, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp.
Nintendo Switch Online
In other news, the company has also announced that Nintendo Switch Online, a paid online service similar to that of Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network, will launch this September. The service will cost $29.95 AUD a year, with one month and three month subscriptions also available for $5.95 AUD and $11.95 AUD respectively.
The service will allow Switch users to play online as well as be able to access a variety of Nintendo’s classic games including, Super Mario 3, Dr. Mario and Balloon Fight. These compilations of games from the archive will be known as the “Classic Game Selection,” however this is subject to change.
Super Mario Movie
Further to the game announcements, Nintendo has also officially confirmed that an animated film, starring Mario, is indeed happening. Nintendo has partnered with Illumination Entertainment, the makers of Despicable Me, to bring the film to life, with the iconic Nintendo developer, Shigeru Miyamoto, set to produce the film.
It’s interesting that the official announcement describes the film as one which stars Mario, rather than it being a Super Mario film in itself. Could there be more to the film than just our favourite Italian plumber?
