Back in November 2017, we reported that a solo Black Widow film was definitely in the works, after Stan Lee himself confirmed this at his panel at the Supanova Comic Con & Gaming Expo in Brisbane last year.
Now, Variety has confirmed that Marvel is pushing forward with the standalone film, hiring writer Jac Schaeffer to pen the script.
While the film has not been green-lit and production is far from starting, getting a writer on board is a solid first step from Marvel. According to Variety:
“Marvel President Kevin Feige met with several candidates before tapping Schaeffer, and Marvel execs met with Johansson to discuss what they wanted from a Black Widow writer.”
Fans have been wanting a solo Black Widow film since the character first appeared in Iron Man 2. It’s interesting that this news comes so soon after film-goers noticed the similarities between Black Widow’s backstory and the plot for 20th Century Fox’s upcoming film, Red Sparrow, starring Jennifer Lawrence, which tells the story of a Russian ballerina joining the secret intelligence service and being a dangerous weapon/spy.
More news on the Black Widow film will be shared in due course as more developments unfold.
